Yoda first appeared in 'The Empire Strikes Back' as a Jedi Master in hiding. Before the Jedi was declared as enemies of the Republic, Yoda was a Grand Master of the Jedi Order. George Lucas originally wanted Yoda to follow other characters in having a full name, Yoda Minch. But it was later decided to have Yoda's history remain a mystery. The closest ever heard of was "tridactyl species" which simply means they have three fingers.

In the Star Wars prequel he was shown instructing all the younglings in the Jedi Temple before they were assigned a master.
